Good Sports: HOOPS CREATING HOPE
Boston-based Shaun Jayachandran founded Crossover Basketball and Scholars Academy several years ago to help marginalized students use basketball as a vehicle to do better in the classroom—and in life overall. Every summer, Crossover invites about 500 students for a free two-week program at the American International School in Chennai. The students learn basketball skills as well as important life lessons from coaches, educators, and others, many traveling from the U.S. to help the youngsters.
Volunteers at the academy have included a number of Indian-American basketball players, including Varun Ram, a guard at University of Maryland, and Shilpa Tummala, a guard at Harvard University.
Compiled and partly written by Indian humorist MELVIN DURAI, author of the novel Bala Takes the Plunge.
