Good Sports: Hockey Team Wins Olympic Bronze Again
If it’s possible to defend a third-place finish, that’s what India did at the Paris Olympics. After losing to Germany 3-2 in the semi-finals, India beat Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal match.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored both goals for India in the match and was the top scorer in the tournament with 10 goals.
India was once a dominant force in men’s hockey, winning eight gold medals between 1928 and 1980. But a long period of decline kept the Indian team off the Olympic podium for nine consecutive Olympics. Now, after earning back-to-back bronze medals, India can once again be considered a hockey power.
“Indian hockey is on the rise and we can beat anyone,” Singh said after the bronze medal match. “I want to say, I am sorry. We wanted to win gold this time after the bronze in Tokyo. We were good enough for gold, but fate was not on our side.”
