Good Sports: HISTORIC GOLD FOR DUTEE CHAND
Sprinter Dutee Chand made history in May when she became India’s first openly gay professional athlete. She made history of another sort last month when she won the gold medal in the 100-meter dash at the World University Games, completing the race in 11.32 seconds. No other Indian sprinter had ever qualified for the final of the event, let alone won it.
Chand is only the second Indian sprinter to win gold in a global event, joining Hima Das, who won the 400-meter race at last year’s World Under-20 Championships.
“This is truly special, given the backdrop I entered this event,” Chand told The Hindu. “And more so because it gives me the tag of ‘World’ which is so important and invaluable for any athlete.”
