Good Sports: High jumper Shankar Wins Gold Medal
After receiving financial support from India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, India’s top high jumper, Tejaswin Shankar, is competing in a series of events in Europe, hoping to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
He won a gold medal at his first event in the continental tour, the High Jump Gala Elmos in Belgium, achieving a mark of 2.23m.
Shankar, 25, attended Kansas State University on an athletics scholarship and was the 2018 NCAA outdoor high jump champion. He won a bronze medal in high jump at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, and a silver medal in the decathlon at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
The Indian record-holder in both men’s high jump and decathlon, he would need to jump 2.33m — four centimeters higher than his personal best—to qualify for the Olympics.
