Good Sports: HEADING A SPORTS CHANNEL
As the editor-in-chief of Gurugram (Gurgaon)-based digital channel Power Sportz, Kanthi Suresh is the first woman in India to head a sports channel. Once a political news anchor at Doordarshan News, Suresh launched the 24-hour sports streaming channel in May 2018 and has managed to attract more than 300,000 users per day without broadcasting any live cricket matches.
“It only goes to show that sports in India is growing and people are open to different kinds of sports,” she told Livemint. “You just have to make them available to the audience.”
Succeeding in a male-dominated field has been a challenge, but one she has met head-on. “The main challenge is that you have to be twice as good as the average man,” she said. “To be accepted as someone who has expertise in sports, you have to work twice as hard, because it’s very easy to brush aside women as glamour dolls who do not understand sports.”
