Good Sports: Gupta Rises to Top NBA Post
The Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA recently fired Gersson Rosas, their president of basketball operations, handing the job on an interim basis to executive vice president Sachin Gupta. He became the first person of Indian origin to run an NBA franchise.
“Incredibly excited,” Gupta said of the opportunity, speaking at the Timberwolves’ press conferences on Media Day. “I think the opportunity to run any NBA franchise is very unique, incredible. For me, this in particular is a dream.”
Born and raised in Boston, Gupta has a degree in computer science and electrical engineering from MIT and an MBA from Stanford. Before joining the NBA, he worked at ESPN and helped develop the network’s NBA Trade Machine, a simulator that allows users to play the role of general manager.
He has worked for four NBA franchises since 2006, including seven years with the Houston Rockets, where he developed a relationship with current Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch.
“I think he’s extremely ready and one of the most bright strategic minds in the game,” Finch said.
