Good Sports: Freshman Shot Putter Wins Silver Medal
Krishna Jayasankar, a freshman at University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), won a silver medal in women’s shot put at the 2022 Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. Hurling a personal-best 15.00m (49-2.5) mark, she became only the second Indian woman to cross the 15m barrier. Former Olympic shot putter Manpreet Kaur of Haryana holds the Indian national record of 18.86m.
Jayasankar, 19, whose parents both played basketball for the Indian national team, grew up in Chennai and was India’s top junior discus thrower. After training in Jamaica, she won a scholarship to UTEP. Discus is her main event, but she’s still several meters behind UTEP’s record holder Samantha Hall. “Samantha Hall is something of a legend here in discus,” Jayasankar told The Indian Express. “She wished me good luck, and I told her, ‘Girl, I’m going to break your 58.50 meter record soon.’”
