Good Sports: DAS SPRINTS TO HISTORIC GOLD
Eighteen-year-old Hima Das made history recently when she won the women’s 400m final race in the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland. Trailing for most of the race, Das showed explosive speed to sprint past America’s Taylor Manson and Romania’s Andrea Miklós. She finished in 51.46 seconds and became the first Indian track athlete to win a gold medal at a world championship in any age group.
Das, the daughter of rice farmers in Assam, shed tears of joy at the medal ceremony as India’s national anthem was played.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a video of her historic win. “Seeing her passionately search for the Tricolour immediately after winning and getting emotional while singing the National Anthem touched me deeply,” he wrote. “I was extremely moved. Which Indian won’t have tears of joy seeing this!”
