Good Sports: CONFIDENCE BOOST FOR TOP-RANKED BOXER
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has ranked Amit Panghal as the world’s No. 1 boxer in the 52kg category.
Panghal, 24, made history last year when he became the first Indian to reach the final of a World Boxing Championships event. He returned home from the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia, with India’s first silver medal.
Seeded second in the flyweight division, Panghal won four bouts to reach the final, where he lost to Uzbekistan’s Shakhobidin Zoirov, an Olympic gold medalist.
“It’s a proud feeling to be No. 1 and also confidence- boosting as it comes at a time when we are about to resume training after a long hiatus,” Panghal told Mid-Day.
