Good Sports: Chopra Hires Czech Legend as Coach
Jan Zelezny, a Czech legend who holds the world record in javelin, has been hired to coach India’s legend-in-the-making Neeraj Chopra. Chopra, the two-time Olympic javelin medalist, announced the appointment of the 58-year-old Zelezny as his coach. He replaces Klaus Bartonietz of Germany, who retired from coaching at age 75.
“Growing up, I admired Jan’s technique and precision and spent a lot of time watching videos of him,” Chopra said in a statement through the Sports Authority of India. “He was the best in the sport for so many years, and I believe that working with him will be invaluable because our throwing styles are similar and his knowledge is unmatched.”
While Chopra has a gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and a silver from this year’s Paris Olympics, his new coach has four Olympic medals (gold in 1992, 1996 and 2000, and silver in 1998). He set the men’s javelin record in 1996 with a throw of 98.48 meters.
