Good Sports: Chhetri Retires from Iinternational Soccer
Sunil Chhetri, widely considered India’s greatest soccer player ever, has announced his retirement from international soccer. The 39-year-old has captained India’s national team for more than a decade.
“The kid inside will probably keep fighting to play football, but the sensible, mature player and person knows that this is it,” Chhetri said, announcing his retirement in a video on X.
He has scored 94 goals for India and retires as the country’s top scorer and most capped player.
Awards he has received in his career include the Arjuna Award in 2011 and the Padma Shri in 2019. In 2021, he became the first soccer player to receive the Khel Ratna, India’s highest sporting honor.
