Good Sports: Chhetri Passes Messi in International Goals
India’s soccer team has been eliminated from qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, managing only one victory in seven group matches. But that victory was a significant one for the country’s top player, Sunil Chhetri, who scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Bangladesh. That propelled him to 11th place all-time in international goals scored, breaking a tie with the great Lionel Messi of Argentina.
But Chhetri, 36, who now has 74 international goals to his name, was quick to dismiss any comparisons to the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, considered the greatest player of this era.
“When anyone sees the (top goal scorer) chart, be happy for five seconds as an Indian and that’s about it,” he said. “Forget about me and Messi because the whole world, including me, is a fan of Messi.”
