Good Sports: Bronze Medal for Long Jumper Murali
Indian long jumper Sreeshankar Murali won a bronze medal at the recent Meeting de Paris, becoming just the third Indian athlete to medal in the Diamond League. The Diamond League is an annual
series of elite track and field competitions.
Murali, who hails from Kerala, recorded a jump of 8.09m at the meet, finishing behind Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou (8.13m) and Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer (8.11m).
Murali didn’t come close to his personal best of 8.36m, but his jump was enough to join javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and discus thrower Vikas Gowda on the list of Indians who’ve reached the podium in the Diamond League.
He will need to jump at least 8.25m in upcoming meets to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, this August. His Indian rival, Jeswin Aldrin of Tamil Nadu, has already qualified, setting a national record with a jump of 8.42m in March, six centimeters longer than the previous record set by Murali.
