Good Sports: Boxer Zareen Takes Aim at Olympic Medal
Nikhat Zareen, a boxer from Telangana, is a two-time world champion, capturing gold at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2022 and 2023. She’s among four women boxers who have qualified for the Paris Olympics from India and is a serious medal contender, along with Lovlina Borgohain.
“This is Nikhat’s time to prove herself,” former Indian men’s boxing coach Blas Iglesias Fernandez told SAI Media. “It’s true that she had lived in the shadows of Mary Kom but now it’s her chance to prove herself and make India proud.”
Zareen, 27, who also won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, is aiming to join Kom and Borgohain as the only women boxers to win Olympic medals for India. “I love the boxing (style) of Nikhat,” said Fernandez, who coaches at the National Boxing Academy in Rohtak, Haryana. “She is very intelligent. She has good ring tactics.”
