Good Sports: Biden Honors Heroic Police Officer
President Joe Biden recently awarded the Medal of Valor to Detective Sumit Sulan of the New York Police Department for his bravery in shooting a gunman who had ambushed him and two other officers, Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora.
The officers had responded to a domestic violence call from a distressed woman when her grown-up son opened fire on them. Rivera, 22, and Mora, 27, were hit and later died from their injuries. Shielding the mother and another son, Sulan shot the gunman, who also died later.
As Biden noted, Sulan was a 27-year-old rookie on the force, joining the 32nd Precinct only two months earlier. His bravery earned him a promotion to detective.
“A very dark day for the city of New York could have been more — even more tragic, with a much higher body count, if it weren’t for Detective Sulan,” Biden said, adding that “the entire nation is grateful for the quick thinking, swift action, and courage under fire that he demonstrated.”
