Good Sports: Bhatia Wins First PGA Tour Title
After finishing high school in Wake Forest, North Carolina, Akshay Bhatia decided to skip college and pursue his dreams in professional golf. Now 21, he recently won his first PGA title, the Barracuda Championship in Truckee, California.
Bhatia had to birdie his final hole in regulation and win a sudden-death playoff against Patrick Rodgers to lift the trophy. He was playing on the PGA Tour on special temporary member status that he was given after finishing second at the 2023 Puerto Rico Open. The Barracuda victory gave him full status on the PGA Tour, which he has been striving for since age 17.
“It’s obviously been a really tough road. I’ve had a lot of up, a lot of down. A lot of good, a lot of bad,” Bhatia told the Associated Press. “But I knew I was going to get here. It was just a matter of time.”
