Good Sports: BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIP
At age 21, Kavita Akula has made history as the first India-born female basketball player to receive a full scholarship to an NCAA Division 1 college in the United States. Akula will attend Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, this fall.
Akula, who hails from Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, came to the U.S. in 2010 when she was 14. She was one of eight Indian players offered basketball scholarships at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
She spent her first two years of college at Garden City Community College in Kansas and will join Grand Canyon University as a junior, majoring in business management and marketing.
According to an ESPN.com report, the point guard also received a scholarship offer from Saint Francis University of Pennsylvania, but chose Grand Canyon because of the college’s new head coach, Nicole Powell, a former star in the WNBA.
“Coach Powell has great energy and she is looking for somebody who can lead the team, and I thought I will fit in well,” Akula told ESPN. “Coach said my experience playing junior college will help the team.”
