Good Sports: Arshdeep Bains Makes his NHL Debut
Arshdeep Bains, a 23-year-old forward from Surrey, B.C., became the sixth player of Indian descent to appear in an NHL game when he made his debut for the Vancouver Canucks on Feb. 20 against the Colorado Avalanche. “I was almost in awe in being out there, it was really special,” Bains said, speaking to reporters after the game.
Bains’ father, Kuldip, an immigrant from India, was in attendance at Ball Arena in Denver to watch his son get 13 minutes, 21 seconds of ice time for the Canucks. “It’s every kid’s dream to make their dad proud,” Bains said.
Bains was called up a week earlier from the Canucks’ AHL affiliate in Abbotsford, B.C. He joins Kevin Bahl, Robin Bawa, Manny Malhotra, Jujhar Khaira and Andreas Martinsen as the only players of Indian descent to appear in NHL games.
