Good Sports: Another Silver Medal for Mirabai Chanu
Manipuri weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, won another silver at the recent 2022 World Weightlifting Championships in Bogota, Colombia.
It was her best performance outside the Olympics since winning a gold medal at the 2017 World Championships, where she had faced less competition due to doping bans on nine countries, including China and Russia.
Chanu, 28, lifted 200kg (87kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk) to finish second to Jiang Huihua of China and just ahead of Olympic champion Zhihua Hou of China.
“Today we showed we can fight, and we will fight,” her coach Vijay Sharma told The Indian Express. “I’m very, very happy today, happier than ever.”
