Good Spoirts : INDIA RECOGNIZES YOGASANA AS COMPETITIVE SPORT
India’s Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy) and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports recently announced the formal recognition of Yogasana as a competitive sport.
Kiren Rijjju, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, said he hoped that Yogasana competitions will increase interest in yoga around the globe. The ministry plans to include Yogasana as a sport in the youth and university games of Khelo India, the national program for the development of sports. The new sport will also be pitched for the National Games.
The sport of Yogasana is expected to have 51 medals in four events (traditional, artistic, rhythmic and free flow Yogasana) and seven categories.
