A CBSE Textbook that Explains “Catfishing”?
A recent social media post on a new chapter in a textbook in India went viral. “9th class textbooks nowadays,” wrote an X user named Khushi, sharing an image of a chapter entitled “Dating and Relationships” that included definitions of terms such as “ghosting” and “catfishing.” In replies to others, Khushi stated that the chapter was from Value Education books that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) prescribes.
The post received many positive comments, with one person hailing CBSE for providing “the most appropriate way to teach teens how to avoid, choose, and navigate relationships in their lives.” A number of media outlets, including NDTV.com and India Today, published articles about the new chapter in CBSE textbooks. But not everyone was fooled. The Hindustan Times, for one, actually checked with CBSE, which stated in an email that the social media post was “totally baseless and incorrect.”
According to CBSE, the chapter being circulated was from a book titled “A Guide to Self Awareness and Empowerment,” published privately and not connected to the CBSE. Students may need to learn about ghosting and catfishing outside the classroom.
