Starring: Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Rana Daggubati, Prateik Babbar
Director: Rohan Sippy
Music Director: Pritam
A thriller shot in picturesque Goa, Dum Maaro Dum is a stylish, sleek and well crafted film with some good performances. However, weak screenplay writing, especially in the second hour, takes away some of the dum (power) from the overall impact. Also, the violence may put off many in the audience.
ACP Vishnu Kamath (Abhishek Bachchan) is entrusted with the job of cleaning up Goa of its drug mafia, whose kingpin is Lorsa Biscuta (Aditya Pancholi). Kamath finds welcome help from Joky (Rana Daggubati), who wants to extricate the trapped innocents, especially his girlfriend Joey (Bipasha Basu), from the mess. Will Kamath succeed in his dangerous mission?
Abhishek is fantastic as the diehard cop whose life changes when personal tragedy strikes. The body language, the dialogue delivery, everything’s near-perfect. Rana Daggubati has great screen presence and is a complete natural. Bipasha does justice to her part and shares great onscreen chemistry with Rana. Deepika sizzles in the title track—a remix version of the cult song of yesteryears, Dum Maaro Dum. There’s Vidya Balan, too, in a brief cameo.
Goa is captured in all its resplendent glory by cinematographer Amit Roy, the dialogues are in sync with the mood of the movie and the music is peppy. If you can overlook the shortcomings, Dum Maaro Dum is above average fare.
