Cocktail, with its very contemporary
appeal and mélange of emotions, is an easy
watch. Though it has the ‘done to death’
theme of love triangle at its heart, the movie
does have a fresh feel to it. It helps that it
is directed by Homi Adajania of Being Cyrus fame. He cuts out
on the melodrama and keeps it subtle and crisp till the end,
when emotions go ballistic. Despite its flaws—the pacing in the
second half is lethargic and the story seems overstretched—Cocktail keeps you entertained.
The story is about three friends: the compulsive flirt, Gautam (Saif Ali Khan), the rich and wild girl, Veronica (Deepika Padukone), and the girl-next-door, Meera (Diana Penty). Gautam goes for a ‘no strings attached’ torrid relationship with Veronica, but falls in love with Meera. By then, Veronica has realized she has deep feelings for Gautam. Who does Gautam eventually marry?
Saif Ali Khan is in his comfort zone here, playing the uber-cool flirtatious rogue to the hilt. Model-turned-actress Diana Penty makes an impressive debut, infusing her character with a quiet poise. But it is Deepika Padukone who comes up with the most striking performance, getting into the skin of her character of the emotionally raw and needy poor little rich girl, with a passionate intensity. This is easily Deepika’s best performance till now. The fabulous Dimple Kapadia as Saif’s mom is immensely likeable.
The cinematography is picture perfect and the music is peppy.
So treat yourself to this Cocktail. You’ll enjoy its fizz.
