MOVIE REVIEW: Bol Bachchan
Starring: Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Asin, Prachi Desai
Director: Rohit Shetty
Music Directors: Himesh Reshammiya, Ajay-Atul
Though Rohit Shetty’s Bol Bachchan
is the official remake of Hrishikesh
Mukherjee’s 1979 cult classic Golmaal, it
does not have the finesse of that genteel
comedy of errors, though the basic premise is the same. There
is humor of course, but it seems labored at times. The purists
will, in fact, fume, but if all you want to do is suspend your
logic and have a good time, then Bol Bachchan is just what the
doctor ordered.
Bol Bachchan revolves around Abbas Ali (Abhishek Bachchan), who is forced due to circumstances to lie about his identity to his lie-hating boss, the powerful village strongman Prithviraj Raghuvanshi (Ajay Devgn) and to keep lying thereafter in order to keep up the façade.
Ajay Devgn playing Prithviraj, who insists on speaking wrong English in every other line, gives us some hilarious moments. But the surprise here is Abhishek Bachchan who, letting down his hair for once, steals the show with his uninhibited act. He manages to sparkle even in a script that is mediocre and lowbrow. He is especially good as Abbas’s alter ego, the effeminate dance teacher who wears flowery shirts. Among the girls, the talented Prachi Desai is striking. Asin, playing Abhishek’s sister, has very little to do.
Among the supporting cast, Archana Puran Singh, who steps into the shoes of Dina Pathak (from the original Golmaal), and stand-up comedian Krushna Abhishek are fabulous.
Though not highly recommended, Bol Bachchan can safely be termed a decent comedy.
