Starring: Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham, Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, Neil Nitin Mukesh
Director: Vishal Bharadwaj
Music Director: Vishal Bharadwaj
If you’re looking for paisa-vasool entertainment, you’d be well advised to stay away from 7 KhoonMaaf. But if you’re the kind who has a fetish for cinema that is dark, daring and different, then you’d probably love this adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s short story, Susanna’s SevenHusbands, by Vishal Bhardwaj.
Susanna (Priyanka Chopra) is a beautiful Anglo-Indian woman who marries seven times in the course of 40-odd years, each time murdering her husband before moving on to the next. A blasphemous theme actually, but you end up empathising with Susanna because all the poor soul really wants from life is true love, which eludes her. Does she eventually succeed in getting it?
On the flip side, the excessive length of the movie detracts from its overall impact. Also, the climax could have been more riveting.
As far as performances go, Priyanka delivers yet another sparkling, award-worthy performance. The talented actress plays a complex character, portraying ages from 21 to 65, with the consummate ease of a veteran. Amongst the husbands, it is Neil and Irrfan who excel as the brutes, though the others are good, too. Vivaan Shah, who narrates the story of Susanna, is surely a talent to watch out for.
The rollicking Darling number based on a traditional Russian song Kalinka, is a delight to hear and watch on screen (one of Susanna’s husbands is a Russian, you see). It is one of the few bright spots in this dimly-lit crime caper.
