This Chashme Baddoor is very David
Dhawanish, if you can call it that—a flawed, yet
entertaining laugh-a-thon for the masses. Loud
and frenzied, it is everything the charming original wasn’t. You
will also have to forget the innocent humor of Sai Paranjpe’s
1981 cult comedy as David’s version is full of sexist jokes and
cheesy puns. If you’re okay with all this, then you might just
find yourself chuckling every now and then.
Sid (Ali Zafar), Jai (Siddharth) and Omi (Divyendu Sharma) are roommates sharing a rented home in Goa. Jai and Omi are basically no-gooders who spend their time chasing girls, while Sid is the serious type. The twist in the tale comes when a pretty girl in the neighborhood, Seema (Taapsee Pannu) falls for Sid. The two jealous friends then try to throw a spanner in the works for the lovers.
Siddharth outshines the others with his natural comic timing. The other winner is Rishi Kapoor who plays Joseph Furtado, the tattooed bar owner, with great flourish. The veteran steps into the shoes of Saeed Jaffrey, Lallan Miya of the original. Rishi also has a nice romantic track with Lilette Dubey. Besides having no charisma or screen presence, Taapsee Pannu doesn’t have much to do, except to say “Dum Hai, Boss” at regular intervals! As for Ali Zafar, the main lead, the guy tries very hard to come up with a decent act, but the awkwardness shows at times.
To sum up, you will have to erase all memories of the original Chashme Buddoor (that one was spelt with a u) from your mind to be able to enjoy the remake. Otherwise, watch at your own peril!
