MOVIE REVIEW
Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma
Director: Yash Chopra
Music: A.R. Rahman
When it’s a Yash Chopra movie, you
know what to expect—love, love, and more love. The catch is
that for those in the audience who are not really enamored
of love stories, the movie might seem to be a tad too long and
tedious. But the fact is that it is very difficult not to succumb
to Shah Rukh Khan’s persuasive charm, as he conveys the
emotion in all its intensity, in a way that only he can. The ladies
lend him wonderful support.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan is not without its shortcomings: the narrative is wobbly with some unconvincing and contrived twists and turns. However, the film works because of the heartfelt performances of the three lead actors and the gorgeously shot locations in the U.K. and Kashmir. And yes, this is not your typical love triangle.
Shah Rukh as Samar Anand, the waiter-turned-soldier (actually bomb disposal expert!) is compelling. Katrina as Meera is the classic Yash Chopra heroine: she looks ethereal and pitches in a competent act, too. (The chemistry between them, though, is not crackling, despite the lip-lock). But it is Anushka Sharma as the feisty filmmaker, Akira who with her infectiously energetic performance, breathes life into the movie, in the sluggish second half to be precise. Sarika, seen after a long time, is terrific in a small role. Rishi and Neetu Kapoor are endearing in a cameo.
Surprisingly, the Rahman-Gulzar combination here isn’t in its elements and the songs don’t really stay with you, except maybe “Challa.”
Watch Jab Tak Hai Jaan to realize what an incurable romantic Yash Chopra was, and that they don’t make ’em like him anymore.
