MOVIE REVIEW
Starring: Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Rishi Kapoor
Director: Karan Johar
Music Directors: Vishal-Shekhar
This high school musical, sports film, and candyfloss love story all rolled into one is actually an updated mix ‘n’ match version of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which was Karan Johar’s directorial debut. There are also faint echoes of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Dil Chahta Hai. In fact, there is nothing new that Student of the Year has to offer, but for those who love good looking designer fluff, it might feel like the greatest entertainer of the year. The truth is that there’s no room for boredom in this high-on-energy movie.
Set in St. Teresa’s High School, the film is about rich brat Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) and middle class boy Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra), who become good friends after the initial tiff. But Abhimanyu’s attraction for his best friend’s girlfriend Shanaya (Alia Bhatt) and her quiet reciprocation causes a rift in their friendship—as does the annual Student of the Year trophy that both the boys are vying for.
The leading men Varun and Siddharth exude confidence and charm, while Alia Bhatt is extremely cute and lights up each frame with her innocence and doll-like visage, though she does not get too much scope to perform. Boman Irani’s son, Kayoze makes an impressive debut, too. But the one who steals the show is Rishi Kapoor playing the gay and garrulous dean, who lusts after his sports coach!
The songs are the high point of the film, and Vishal-Shekhar are in great form. The cinematography is terrific, too.
So, shortcomings apart, Student of the Year is worth a watch, if only to escape into an unreal world.
