8x10 Tasveer

Let it be told at the very outset that 8x10 Tasveer is not like any of Nagesh Kukunoor’s earlier movies. It is as far removed from Iqbal and Dor as could possibly be. A whodunit with a bit of sci-fi thrown in, Kukunoor’s latest offering has been stylishly shot in the picture-perfect locales of Canada and South Africa.
Jai Puri (Akshay), a forest ranger living in Canada, possesses some strange powers. He just has to look long and hard at a photograph and he’s transported back to the time the snap was taken. Jai is forced to rely on his own powers when his father, an oil magnate, falls off his luxurious yacht and dies in the presence of his wife (Sharmila) and his business partners. A detective (Jaaved Jaffrey) convinces Jai that his father’s death was by no means an accident and that the senior Puri was actually murdered. Fortunately, his mom had clicked the group just before that ill-fated moment.
The film has an interesting and unusual premise but fails to leave the desired impact because of its unexciting screenplay and undue repetition of certain scenes. On the positive side, the movie begins at a brisk pace and has some well executed sequences. Cinematography is fantastic, the background score terrific and Akshay is in great form doing what he does best—lots of action, good stunts and some sincere acting—but to no avail really, as the script lets him down. Strangely, Jaaved Jaffrey as the maverick detective, is not so funny. Sharmila is graceful.
On the whole, Kukunoor disappoints this time: the climax is riddled with too many loopholes for it to be convincing.
