Starring: Aamir Khan, Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra, Kriti Malhotra
Director: Kiran Rao
Kiran Rao’s directorial debut is like a whiff of fresh air, a gentle ode to the city of Mumbai with its myriad moods. Not surprising then, that the film itself is heavily imbued with soul and ambience, peopled with characters that are essentially lost souls, longing souls. So, certainly not a movie for the masses.
Dhobi Ghat revolves around a diverse foursome whose lives crisscross: the upmarket artist, Arun (Aamir Khan), the laundry boy, Munna (Prateik), the Wall Street banker on a sabbatical, Shai (Monica Dogra) and the Muslim girl, Yasmeen (Kriti Malhotra) trapped in a crumbling marriage. Arun meets Shai at his exhibition, a chance encounter that has great potential to lead to something?. Meanwhile, Shai befriends Munna, the friendly neighbourhood dhobi (washerman) who happens to be a wannabe actor, too, while Arun gradually gets obsessed with the video-taped moving story of the enigmatic Yasmeen..
It is interesting to watch Aamir in a brooding role, and he does it well. Both the girls add a freshness and realism to their parts, skilfully juxtaposing strength and vulnerability, drawing you effortlessly into their worlds. But the one who is a special treat to watch is the late Smita Patil’s son, Prateik. As the young and handsome Munna, whose idol is the superbrat Salman Khan, Prateik is endearingly natural. Certainly an actor to watch out for.
Tushar Kanti Ray does a marvellous job of capturing Mumbai in all its hues and the Argentian composer Gustavo’s lyrical strains enhance the changing moods of the movie, from melancholy to elation.
So for those of you who like your cinema to be intelligent and artistic, Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat is what you should be watching
