MOVIE REVIEW: Ulajh
Ulajh
Starring: Janhvi Kapoor, Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Mathew, Adil Hussain
Director: Sudhanshu Saria
Music Director: Shashwat Sachdev
Ulajh is an espionage drama which had immense potential to be a slick atmospheric thriller had the plot been a little more intelligent and the writing sharper. The convoluted second half just collapses. Which is a pity because Ulajh—probably the first Bollywood movie to deal seriously with the coveted Indian Foreign Service— deserved better.
Suhana Bhatia (Janhvi Kapoor), a promising young diplomat, finds herself embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy soon after she joins as the Deputy High Commissioner in London, even as her diplomat father is appointed permanent representative of India to the United Nations.
It is not a cakewalk for Janhvi Kapoor but she manages to hold her own as the beleaguered Suhana Bhatia, though she needs to work harder on her dialogue delivery.
Janhvi’s key co-actors—Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Mathew, Adil Hussain, and Sudhir Tailang—are of course screen performers of proven quality. In fact, Gulshan Devaiah’s chemistry with Janhvi is one of the most potent elements of Ulajh. Meiyang Chang too leaves an impact in his brief but important role.
Despite all its shortcomings, Ulajh is engaging enough.
