The Girl on the Train

A psychological thriller, The Girl on the Train is adapted from Paula Hawkins’ bestseller of the same name that was turned into a Hollywood movie in 2016. So while one sits down to watch it with great expectations, does the movie manage to live up to them? Not really!
A car accident leaves feisty London-based lawyer Mira Kapoor (Parineeti Chopra) psychologically scarred. She suffers a miscarriage, becomes an alcoholic, and worse, develops a rare form of amnesia. If this wasn’t enough, her cardiologist husband Shekhar (Avinash Tiwary) divorces her.
Soon a murder is committed and Mira becomes the prime suspect, but the lady does not remember what happened that night in the Greenwich forest.
Parineeti Chopra, seen on screen after a hiatus, is sincere enough—her hard work shows—but she seems out of her depth in some crucial moments. Aditi Rao Hydari as Nusrat infuses her character with beauty and vulnerability, while the talented Kirti Kulhari is somewhat of a waste in this film as the turbaned lady inspector. Not her fault actually that she is saddled with some inane lines.
On the positive side, the editing is taut, cinematography impressive, and the background score is in sync with the atmosphere. But implausible twists and a contrived ending mar the impact of the film which had a huge potential to be a terrific thriller. An opportunity lost.
