Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya

With all the noise around Artificial Intelligence these days, a Bollywood film dealing with the man-machine relationship was just waiting to happen. This is not the first one, though. And so, we have Teri Baaton Mein, touted as an ‘impossible love story’ but which is actually a mishmash of genres: sci-fi, mushy romance, the ubiquitous family drama, and comedy (not all of it in good taste).
Delhi lad Aryan Agnihotri (Shahid Kapoor) is a robotics engineer who on a trip to the U.S. finds himself hopelessly smitten with Sifra (Kriti Sanon). And who might Sifra be? Well, the gorgeous lady is actually a super intelligent robot, the ambitious creation of Aryan’s aunt, Urmila Shukla (Dimple Kapadia), who is the CEO of a robotics firm in the U.S. Believe it or not, the besotted guy decides to take Sifra back home to India to meet his boisterous brood!
The crackling chemistry between the good-looking lead actors redeems to some extent the half-baked writing (it had immense potential) and average direction. Shahid is all goofy and funny, while Kriti Sanon as Sifra hits all the right notes. Her poker-faced robotic act and on-cue laughter are bang-on. She excels in the climactic scene.
This sexist comedy leaves you with one disturbing thought: Is the perfect woman akin to an obedient machine coded to take orders and be switched on or off at the flick of a button?
