MOVIE REVIEW: Sherni (Tigress)
Sherni (Tigress)
Starring: Vidya Balan, Vijay Raaz, Brijendra Kala
Director: Amit Masurkar
Sherni, directed by Amit Masurkar of Newton fame, is as much about the man-eating tigress on the prowl in the film as it is about the upright forest officer played by the talented Vidya Balan, seen after a hiatus on the big screen. The movie, with the man versus animal conflict at its core, is intriguing and intense, making its point without a loud roar! More importantly, it leaves you thinking, though it does have bits that seem repetitive.
Set in the jungles of Madhya Pradesh, Sherni gives us an immersive experience, thanks to the riveting cinematography and sound design. Like in Newton, here too, the protagonist Vidya Vincent (Vidya Balan) is a government officer, battling a rotten system with patience and tact, rather than belligerence.
Sherni has many terrific actors—special mention to Brijendra Kala who plays Bansal—but it is Vidya Balan’s controlled and understated performance that drives the film.
Though not as brilliant as Newton, Sherni is a worthy follow-up. Take out time to watch it. It’s streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
