MOVIE REVIEW: Rocketry: The Nambi Effect
Samrat Prithviraj
Starring: R Madhavan, Simran, Rajit Kapur, Sam Mohan
Director: R Madhavan
Music Director: Sam C. S.
This film is a classic example of noble intentions not quite meeting their match in execution. Average direction and unimaginative writing prevent Rocketry from soaring. Still, Madhavan as a debutant director deserves to be commended for picking up a real-life story that needed to be told and that some may not even be aware of.
Chronicling the life of one of India’s pioneering and brilliant rocket scientists, Nambi Narayanan, who was falsely implicated in an espionage case at the height of his career in 1994, Rocketry only picks up steam in the second half, giving you moments that are worth your while. The scenes in jail are harrowing. The first half seems more like a Science class!
Madhavan, in the titular role, gives it his all. The supporting cast is in fine form too, especially Simran (playing the dignified and sensitive Meena Narayanan) who is a revelation. Sam Mohan, whose character is a lot more fleshed out than others, too makes his mark as Unni. And oh, there’s Shah Rukh Khan too!
It’s clear that Madhavan the director isn’t in the same league as Madhavan the actor. But the movie is certainly worth a watch for its subject.
