MOVIE REVIEW: Pagglait (Crazy)
Pagglait (Crazy)
Starring: Sanya Malhotra, Ashutosh Rana, Sheeba Chaddha, Sayani Gupta
Director: Umesh Bist
Music Director: Arijit Singh
A young man, Astik, is dead, and while his immediate family is inconsolable and a stream of relatives start arriving at their Lucknow haveli for 13 days of mourning, Astik’s wife of five months, Sandhya feels no sadness. All the young widow craves at this somber moment is some Pepsi and chips! So this is Pagglait’s unusual premise. But the movie, unfolding as a quirky drama, is not flippant. This is its greatest strength, not that it is without flaws.
Pagglait begins really well, enriched by sharp writing and a bunch of great performances, but becomes sluggish in some places. Ashutosh Rana and Sheebha Chaddha are superb as Astik’s shattered, morally conflicted parents. Sayani Gupta and Sharib Hashmi put in special appearances but leave an impact greater than the length of their roles, and it is always a joy to see Raghubir Yadav.
Surrounded by this ensemble of daunting actors, Sanya Malhotra in the central role of Sandhya is still able to hold her own, lending her character empathy and charm. Shruti Sharma as Sandhya’s close friend Nazia Zaidi is endearing.
Pagglait marks singer Arijit Singh’s debut as music composer, and he does a decent job. Dil Udd Ja Re and Thoda Kam Ajnabi are pleasing to the ears.
By the way, the term Pagglait suggests a woman crazy enough to break the rules and take on the world. One cannot give away more!
