MOVIE REVIEW: Neeyat (Intention)
Neeyat (Intention)
Starring: Vidya Balan, Ram Kapoor, Rahul Bose, Shahana Goswami
Director: Anuradha Menon
Music Directors: Mikey McCleary
This whodunnit tries hard to be original but the influences are there for all to see: Knives Out, Agatha Christie’s mysteries, especially And Then There Were None, and even Daphne du Maurier’s masterpiece Rebecca. But to its credit, Neeyat is able to sustain the mystery till the end, despite the dull stretches and uneven writing riddled with loopholes. And we certainly didn’t see the final twist coming.
A flamboyant tycoon, Ashish Kapoor, aka AK (Ram Kapoor), mysteriously falls off a cliff on his birthday which is being celebrated at his windswept Scottish castle in London. For CBI inspector Mira Rao (Vidya Balan), who’s convinced that it’s a murder and not suicide, each of the motley bunch of guests gathered there is a suspect.
Disappointingly, the interesting ensemble cast does not translate into great performances, with only Shashank Arora, who plays the junkie and troubled son, and Neeraj Kabi leaving an impact. Most of them seem like cardboard cutouts. Vidya Balan herself, seen on the big screen after a hiatus, is not very impressive in her role of the understated, nerd-like sleuth. We have seen the talented actress in better form.
By the way, an unexpected cameo in the end points to the possibility of a sequel to Neeyat. You can watch this thriller if you love whodunnits. But don’t go with great expectations!
