MOVIE REVIEW: Munjya
Munjya
Starring: Abhay Verma, Sharvari Wagh. Mona Singh
Director: Aditya Sarpotdar
Music Directors: Sachin-Jigar
Those who are looking for a fullblown horror movie might be a wee bit disappointed because the humor often dilutes the horror element in Munjya, the fourth film in Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy universe, after Stree, Roohi, and the most recent Bhediya.
Drawing from the Maharashtrian folklore of a mischievous child demon, the film tells the story of a young man named Bittu (Abhay Verma), who, after unwittingly unleashing the eponymous spirit Munjya, realizes he must save himself and his love interest from its clutches. What follows is a hilarious and terrifying adventure which keeps you entertained despite the uneven pace sometimes and a weak screenplay in certain parts.
What actually work for the film are the performances and the cinematography. Abhay Verma with his geeky good looks and confused air does a great job as Bittu while Sharvari Wagh complements him well as his love interest, Bela. Mona Singh as
Bittu’s protective mother Pammi is an absolute scene stealer, courtesy her impeccable comic timing. Suhas Joshi stands out as Bittu’s grandmother who motivates him to deal with the demon.
As for Munjya himself, the CGI veers towards the cartoonish. Munjya’s look might remind you of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings movies.
There’s a surprise star cameo too.
