MOVIE REVIEW: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
Starring: Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi, Sanjay Kapoor
Director: Sriram Raghavan
Music Director: Pritam
Beneath all those Hitchcockian twists and turns, Merry Christmas is actually a poignant tale of love and urban loneliness. Starring Katrina Kaif and South Indian star Vijay Sethupathi in the lead roles, Sriram Raghavan’s thriller reinforces the belief that seemingly odd star pairings can sometimes work wonders on the big screen.
Drawing inspiration from Frederic Dard’s 1961 novel, Le Monte- Charge, Merry Christmas is a story about two lonely strangers— the unhappily married Maria (Katrina Kaif in great form) and the mysterious Albert (Vijay Sethupathi)—whose paths cross one Christmas Eve in Mumbai, then called Bombay. One thing leads to another and a night of romance turns into a nightmare.
The charming onscreen chemistry between the ‘different as chalk and cheese’ Katrina and Sethupathi will take you by surprise. While Katrina brings to Maria a simmering stoic sadness—much like Kareena Kapoor in Jaane Jaan—Sethupathi excels in delivering humor-laced lines with a straight face. The actor is a delight to watch.
Merry Christmas boasts of a stellar supporting cast too. Special mention to standout cameos by Sanjay Kapoor an Radhika Apte. The camera work and background score work together seamlessly to transport the viewer to a world of mystery and intrigue.
Merry Christmas, despite the slow first start, never loses its grip on the audience.
