MOVIE REVIEW: Loveyapa

Gen-Z couple Gaurav and Baani think they share a transparent relationship till Baani’s father Atul Kumar Sharma asks them to swap their mobile phones for a day and then decide whether they still want to get married. This then is the premise of this romantic comedy made for a generation that expresses its deepest emotions through emojis. Can love and trust survive in the digital age where well-kept secrets can tumble out of cellphones?

A remake of the 2022 Tamil hit Love Today, Loveyapa marks the big screen debuts of Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan, and Sridevi’s younger daughter, Khushi Kapoor. Khushi shows promise in the emotional scenes and Junaid in the comic. Romance does not seem to be his forte but he has nice eyes like his father’s. However, try as hard as they can, these star kids have a long way to go in terms of screen presence. They lack the charm that can help cover up flaws in storytelling. But of course, there’s hope yet—it’s their first film.

The seasoned Ashutosh Rana as the strict patriarch evokes awe and humor with his chaste Hindi. Grusha Kapoor as Junaid’s loud, nagging Punjabi mother makes the most of the screen time that she gets. She also gets to mouth some home truths which give the movie its meaning and purpose. Comedian Kiku Sharda has a substantial role here with a range of shades.

Loveyapa would have been a more entertaining watch (there are some genuinely funny moments) had the narrative been more focused, the pacing less uneven, and the editing more crisp.
