MOVIE REVIEW: Looop Lapeta
Looop Lapeta
Starring: Taapsee Pannu, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Shreya Dhanwantary
Director: Aakash Bhatia
Music Director: Rahul Pais, Nariman Khambata
Adapted from the 1998 German thriller, Run Lola Run, Looop Lapeta reminds one of the quirky Delhi Belly. The debutant director needs to be lauded for giving us something offbeat and whacky. However, for a movie where time is of the essence, it takes far too much time to warm up. Nevertheless, it keeps you hooked, and the masterstroke is the mythology angle.
Savi (Taapsee Pannu) is an athlete who has to find 50 lakh rupees in 50 minutes to save her boyfriend Satya (Tahir Raj Bhasin) from possible death. Satya has lost this cash belonging to his mobster-boss. Savi races against the clock, but can she break out of a curious cycle of dead ends? There are other tracks running parallel and all the characters are interlinked in the time loop which Savi controls.
Pannu’s performance holds the film together. The talented Bhasin is reduced to playing second fiddle, but he is good. The film is also enlivened by the supporting cast, and there is something likable about the romance between Jacob (Sameer Kevin Roy) and Julia (Shreya Dhanwantary). Dhanwantary, by the way, leaves an impact with an almost fiveminute- long monologue.
While retaining the split-screen montages of the original, Looop Lapeta goes a bit over the top with its stylized sets and lengthy voiceovers. The saturated colors sometimes hurt the eye. But the cinematography is worth applauding.
The background score is hauntingly eerie.
