MOVIE REVIEW : Laxmii
Laxmii
Starring: Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, Sharad Kelkar
Director: Raghava Lawrence
Music directors: Tanishk Bagchi
Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get worse, along comes the horror-comedy Laxmii to prove you wrong. The remake of a Tamil hit Kanchana, written and directed by Raghava Lawrence, Laxmii, previously titled Laxmi Bomb, is so absurd that it can’t even begin to entertain you. What’s more, Akshay’s unabashed caricaturing of his transgender avatar dilutes the film’s basic message about the society’s insensitivity towards the third gender.
Akshay Kumar plays Asif, a Muslim who becomes possessed by the spirit of a revenge-seeking transwoman Laxmii. It’s an irony of sorts as Asif is a rationalist who does not believe in ghosts. Kiara Advani plays his wife Rashmi.
The acting is pedestrian despite some good names in the cast like Ayesha Raza and Rajesh Sharma. Kiara as Rashmi does little except dance at the Burj Khalifa, no less! But thank God for Sharad Kelkar who leaves a greater impact than everyone else put together despite appearing late in the film.
You can watch this ‘supernatural comedy’ just to see just how bizarre it is. Also, please don’t expect chills down your spine, unless you find the color of blood and sounds of wailing scary!
Laxmii is streaming on Disney + Hotstar
