It is difficult to slot this film—alternately a dark comedy and a whodunit, and while you admire it for being wildly original, it also leaves you exhausted. Kangana Ranaut is, of course, the driving force of this quirky thriller, which has an intriguing first hour but a contrived and implausible second half.
Bobby Batliwala Grewal (Kangana Ranaut) is a dubbing artist who suffers from acute psychosis. Imagining entire scenarios in her head, and given to hysterical outbursts and bouts of paranoia, Bobby is quite a character! The turning point in the story: A new tenant, the married Keshav (Rajkummar Rao) moves into the flat next door, and Bobby becomes fixated on him. Then a death takes place and Bobby and Keshav are both suspects.
Kangana has played unhinged characters before on screen but she imbues her Bobby with a never-before-seen fierceness and single-minded conviction. Rajkummar Rao fits into his edgy onscreen persona like a glove, and it’s delightful to see the two talented actors play off each other. They are provided solid support by Satish Kaushik, Amrita Puri, and Hussain Dalal, who brings in the comic quotient quite effectively. The film is dazzlingly shot, too, for which the credit must go to cinematographer Pankaj Rai. The sound design is equally impressive.
It’s an intelligent script that loses steam midway. Still, kudos to the writer and director for pushing the envelope. It urges us to look beyond the obvious. Definitely worth a watch.
