MOVIE REVIEW: Jigra
Jigra
Starring: Alia Bhatt, Vedang Raina, Manoj Pahwa
Producers: Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt
Director: Vasant Bala
Music Director: Achint Thakkar
The waif-like Alia Bhatt is the "hero" of this jailbreak thriller, which is enough reason to watch it. Apart from that, Jigra doesn't have much going for it, except some dramatic moments, and some slick but long-drawn action sequences. The background music is good too.
Rooted in sibling love, the rescue drama (which has shades of the 1993 Mahesh Bhatt-directed Gumrah) could have been consistently engaging had the narrative been more streamlined and less chaotic. A parallel prison break plot only adds to the confusion.
Satya (Alia Bhatt) will do anything for her kid brother, Ankur (Vedang Raina), and so when he is falsely implicated in a drugs case and incarcerated in a fictitious South East Asian island nation which is governed by draconian laws, she vows to free him and save him from death by electrocution. The determined sister then plans a daring jailbreak with the help of retired gangster Bhatia (Manoj Pahwa in great form) and former cop Muthu (Rahul Ravindran).
Alia Bhatt sinks her teeth into a role that’s a marked departure from anything that she has done so far. The actress pulls off the death-defying stunts with elan and convincingly portrays angst, helplessness, and resilience. Vedang Raina, who stood out as Reggie in The Archies, is equally effective in his big screen debut here, though he falters a bit in the emotional scenes.
You can watch Jigra to see Alia in her sherni mode.
