MOVIE REVIEW: Govinda Naam Mera
Freddy
Starring: Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani, Bhumi Pednekar
Director: Shashank Khaitan
Music Directors: Meet Bros, Tanishk Bagchi, Rochak Kohli
First things first. Shashank Khaitan’s Govinda Naam Mera has nothing to do with the actor Govinda. But it is certainly reminiscent of the masala entertainers of the ’90s, which starred Govinda. However, Vicky Kaushal, in this never-seen-before avatar, may not appeal to those in the audience who have loved the actor in his serious, intense roles, though he does give it his best shot.
The story revolves around a struggling background dancer, Govinda Waghmare (Vicky Kaushal) who is caught between a domineering wife, Gauri (Bhumi Pednekar), and a demanding girlfriend, Suku (Kiara Advani). Add to that his screechy wheelchair-bound mom (Renuka Shahane), a messy property case, and finally, a murder... and Govinda’s life is an ungainly chaos!
The last hour of the film, especially the climax, redeem this so-called comic thriller which comes with low doses of sporadic humor and a first half that drags. The dialogues in some places are cringeworthy, and the narrative seems somewhat flat despite twists and turns.
While Kiara pitches in an impressive act, balancing the liveliness of her character with sinister charm, Bhumi is fun to watch and you wish there was more of her in the film. Her scenes with Vicky are the highlight of the first half.
And oh yes, watch out for a special star cameo!
