It is so refreshing to have something as out-of-the-box as this Bollywood film’s premise. Two couples with the same surname and a sperm mix-up in an in vitro fetilization clinic—a perfect recipe for plenty of laugh-out-loud moments! In fact, Good Newwz works best when it is being bawdy and blatant. Things begin to dip when it decides to become melodramatic towards the end.
The scenes between the two couples who are the exact opposites of each other—Varun and Deepti Batra (Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor) and Honey and Monica Batra (Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani)—are crackling. Good to see Akshay reminding us just how funny he can be. Full marks to Kareena Kapoor for making her Deepti believable and real, despite not having a hair out of place ever in the film!
Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani tend to overdo the loud Punjabi act but are fun to watch anyway. Adil Hussain and Tisca Chopra are terrific as the specialist doctors.
While the film does raise some pertinent questions regarding pregnancy and childbirth, it sadly reveals a rather regressive tone by its rejection of the idea of adoption.
