MOVIE REVIEW: Freddy
Freddy
Starring: Kartik Aaryan, Alaya F.
Director: Shashanka Ghosh
Music Director: Pritam
This twisted take on loneliness, love, and revenge is far from perfect, but you will certainly think twice before visiting your dentist after you have watched it! As a guy haunted by childhood trauma, Kartik Aaryan strives hard—may be too hard—to play his most challenging avatar till date.
Dr. Freddy Ginwala (Kartik Aaryan) is a successful dental surgeon but a socially awkward and lonely young man whose only friend is a tortoise. Freddy’s humdrum life takes a dramatic turn when he falls for Kainaaz Irani (Alaya F.) who is in an abusive marriage. This sets off a chain of events that bring to the fore a dormant and dangerous facet of the protagonist’s personality.
Freddy’s fatal flaw is that it never feels dark enough, despite attempts to build up sinister energy around the lead character. What’s more, the latter half of the movie is a bit of a mess as it slips into a mundane revenge drama. Alaya F. has a charming personality and tries her best to pitch in a nuanced performance, though she has a long way to go.
All its shortcomings notwithstanding, you can watch this psycho-thriller to see Kartik Aaryan boldly attempt to change his lover-boy image.
(Freddy is streaming on Disney + Hotstar)
