MOVIE REVIEW: Farzi (Fake)
Farzi (Fake)
Starring: Shahid Kapur, Vijay Sethupathi, Raashii Khanna, KK Menon
Director: Raj & DK
Music Directors: Ketan Sodha, Sachin-Jigar, Tanishk Bagchi
Set in post-demonetization India, Farzi is an engaging and entertaining thriller that marks Shahid Kapur’s debut on the
OTT platform. He plays a gifted but struggling artist who decides to apply his unsung talent to the crime of counterfeiting money.
Sunny (Shahid Kapur) manages to bail out his grandfather’s (Amol Palekar in excellent form) magazine which is on the verge of folding up by generating his own counterfeit cash with the help of his childhood friend, Firoz (Bhuvan Arora). What starts out as a plan to salvage a printing press turns into a fullfledged operation driven by greed, and Sunny soon finds himself embroiled in a cross-border fake currency racket.
Shahid gets into the skin of his meaty central character and delivers a performance that is marked by brooding intensity and restraint. The supporting cast is in great form too but the one who truly stands out is Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi playing maverick cop Michael in his Hindi film debut. As an investigator who has made it his mission to stop the circulation of fake currency in India, Vijay adds a lot of heft to the eight-part series. He also tickles your funny bone.
On the negative side, some parallel stories seem unnecessary, and too much time is devoted to detailing the techniques of making fake bank notes. All this slows down the pace of the rather lengthy show at some places.
(Farzi is streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
