Dil Bechara is not a perfect film. But it most certainly is a special film, because when was the last time you remember having watched the swan song of a talented and popular young actor soon after his tragic death? So, it’s with an ache in your heart and a lump in your throat that you watch Sushant Singh Rajput light up the screen each time he appears on it, with his winsome exuberance and infectious smile. It’s almost a surreal, and at the same time, a carthatic experience.
An official remake of the 2016 Hollywood hit The Fault in Our Stars (which in turn was based on John Green’s bestseller of the same name), Dil Bechara is a bittersweet love story of two young cancer patients, who try and live life to the hilt in the face of the looming tragedy. Sushant is charming as Manny, the guy who’s lost a leg to cancer. He’s especially good in his vulnerable moments. Debutante Sanjana Sanghi is assured and fetching as Kizie Basu, a girl whose constant companion is an oxygen cylinder which she has to lug around as her thyroid cancer has reached her lungs. Their love scenes are tender.
Music by AR Rahman is in sync with the mood of the movie – especially hummable are the title track (watch out for Sushant’s dance moves in this number) and the romantic love ballad Taare Ginn.
Director Mukesh Chhabra shows promise, but sadly he won’t get Sushant again!
