Possibly India’s first all-female heist comedy, Crew is fueled by the sheer star energy that Hindi cinema’s three leading actresses—Tabu, Kareena Kapoor, and Kriti Sanon—exude on screen. In fact, it is their camaraderie and sisterhood that propels this flight of and, to a large extent, camouflages the flaws in the writing and screenplay.
Three flight attendants—Geeta Sethi (Tabu), Jasmine Bajwa (Kareena Kapoor), and Divya Rana (Kriti Sanon)—resort to gold smuggling in a desperate bid for survival when they discover that their airlines is on the verge of bankruptcy. But that’s just the beginning of their misadventures.
Crew takes off smoothly and has an easy breezy first half— but then it’s plagued by turbulence in the second half, leading to a bumpy landing. Yet it manages to entertain all through, although the humor sometimes falls flat As for the much-touted heist, it comes in too late and is logic-defying with sequences that seem too rushed.
While Kareena oozes oomph and performs with abandon, Tabu is oh so comfortable in her older woman avatar. Together they are a riot. In the company of these stalwarts, Kriti Sanon manages to hold her own and her romantic scenes with Diljit Dosanjh, though brief, have a spark. Diljit is a charmer and you wish the makers had given him more screen time. And in the biggest of all surprises, comedy show host Kapil Sharma plays Tabu’s husband! Trupti Khamkar, who plays sub-inspector Mala, is a scene stealer.
